Open Me Carefully: Emily Dickinson's Intimate Letters to Susan Huntington Dickinson - Livro de bolso

ISBN: 0963818368

[SR: 434280], Paperback, [EAN: 9780963818362], Paris Press, Paris Press, Book, [PU: Paris Press], Paris Press, Open Me Carefully: Emily Dickinsons Intimate Letters to Susan Huntington Dickinson, Emily Dickinson is a figure of intense contradictions: the hermit, the spinster, the frail woman in white who nonetheless wrote poems of almost painfully turbulent passion. For years, biographers have speculated about the male mentor who inspired Dickinson's work, naming intellectual figures like Thomas Wentworth Higginson and Samuel Bowles as possible candidates. As it turns out, however, they might have looked closer to home. For years, both before and after a painful break in their relationship, Dickinson wrote ardent letters to her friend (and eventual sister-in-law) Susan Huntington Dickinson. In fact, she wrote more letters to Susan than to anyone else, despite the fact that at one point Susan lived only a stone's throw away. Like Dickinson's poetry, these letters are a curious business: half epistles, half poems, idiosyncratically capitalized, punctuated, and spaced. They are not merely warm, in the 19th-century way; they are fierce, even erotic, in the kind of attachment they express. Yet editors Ellen Hart and Martha Smith aren't in the business of outing anyone; they prefer to simply present the correspondence in all its passionate oddity. Susan Dickinson was clearly a friend as well as one of the most valued readers of her sister-in-law's poetry--but was she its inspiration, as well? Hart and Smith let the reader decide., 934994, Authors, 934988, Arts & Literature, 934986, Biographies & Memoirs, 927726, Subjects, 916520, Books, 935184, Women, 935176, Specific Groups, 934986, Biographies & Memoirs, 927726, Subjects, 916520, Books, 942370, Biographies & Memoirs, 942372, Gay, 942376, Lesbian, 160227011, Transgender, 942318, Gay & Lesbian, 927726, Subjects, 916520, Books, 942348, Lesbian, 942330, Fiction, 942326, Literature & Fiction, 942318, Gay & Lesbian, 927726, Subjects, 916520, Books, 932106, Women Writers & Feminist Theory, 932082, Books & Reading, 927790, Literature & Fiction, 927726, Subjects, 916520, Books, 932534, Lesbian, 932522, Gay & Lesbian, 932470, Genre Fiction, 927790, Literature & Fiction, 927726, Subjects, 916520, Books, 932594, United States, 932552, History & Criticism, 927790, Literature & Fiction, 927726, Subjects, 916520, Books, 932622, Letters & Correspondence, 927790, Literature & Fiction, 927726, Subjects, 916520, Books, 932624, Poetry, 274707011, African, 274708011, Ancient, Classical & Medieval, 933134, Anthologies, 274709011, Asian, 274710011, Australia & Oceania, 933192, British, 1051150, Canadian, 274711011, Caribbean & Latin American, 933136, Chinese, 274706011, Criticism, 933138, Epic, 933140, French, 933144, German, 933146, Inspirational & Religious, 933148, Irish, 933150, Japanese & Haiku, 933174, Limericks & Humourous Verse, 933152, Love Poems, 13804241, Middle Eastern, 933154, Norse & Icelandic Sagas, 933158, Russian, 933160, Single Authors, 933172, Spanish, 933178, United States, 933176, Writing, 927790, Literature & Fiction, 927726, Subjects, 916520, Books, 1080392, 19th Century, 1080390, United States, 927790, Literature & Fiction, 927726, Subjects, 916520, Books, 1080608, History & Criticism, 1080390, United States, 927790, Literature & Fiction, 927726, Subjects, 916520, Books, 15306521, American Literature, 15306451, Literature, 15306041, Humanities, 15115321, Textbooks, 927726, Subjects, 916520, Books, 930292, Women Writers, 930284, Women's Studies, 5489589011, Politics & Social Sciences, 927726, Subjects, 916520, Books

Open Me Carefully: Emily Dickinson's Intimate Letters to Susan Huntington Dickinson - livro usado

ID: 4285781

For the first time, selections from Emily Dickinson's thirty-six year correspondence to her neighbor and sister-in-law, Susan Huntington Dickinson, are compiled in a single volume. "Open Me Carefully" invites a dramatic new understanding of Emily Dickinson's life and work, overcoming a century of censorship and misinterpretation. For the millions of readers who love Emily Dickinson's poetry, "Open Me Carefully" brings new light to the meaning of the poet's life and work. Gone is Emily as lonely spinster--here is Dickinson in her own words, passionate and fully alive. "With spare commentary, Smith ... and Hart ... let these letters speak for themselves. Most important, unlike previous editors who altered line breaks to fit their sense of what is poetry or prose, Hart and Smith offer faithful reproductions of the letters' genre-defying form as the words unravel spectacularly down the original page."-Renee Tursi, " The New York Times Book Review" Open Me Carefully: Emily Dickinson's Intimate Letters to Susan Huntington Dickinson Smith, Martha Nell / Dickinson, Emily / Hart, Ellen Louise, Paris Press
