Sylvia Constance Ashton-Warner MBE (17 December 1908 – 28 April 1984) was a New Zealand writer, poet and educator. She spent many years teaching Maori children, using stimulating and often pioneering techniques which she wrote about in her 1963 treatise Teacher and in the various volumes of her autobiography. Her success derived from a commitment to "releasing the native imagery and using it for working material" and her belief that communication must produce a mutual response in order to effect a lasting change. As a novelist, she produced several works mostly centred on strong female characters. Her novel Spinster (1958) was made into the 1961 film Two Loves (also known as The Spinster) starring Shirley MacLaine. She was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire, for services to education and literature, in the 1982 Queen's Birthday Honours., Books<

Viking Adult. Very Good. 20 x 20 x 20 inches. Hardcover. 1989. 296 pages. Spine faded<br>Traces the life of the controversial Ne w Zealand educator and novelist, and attempts to depict her compl ex personality Editorial Reviews From Publishers Weekly Teacher -novelist Ashton-Warner is revealed in this rich, lively biograph y as a contradictory figure who, early on, was never one to let f acts cloud the drama of a good story. Although her unorthodox app roach to teaching Maori children--formulated on the concept of ke y vocabulary based on native imagery--won her international fame as an innovator, Ashton-Warner frequently expressed her dislike o f teaching. This biography, the first book by New Zealand freelan cer Wood, supplies factual evidence as to the parallels between A shton-Warner's ambivalence in areas of her own life and that of t he heroines of her novels, especially the bestseller Spinster. We 're shown that life on her own terms was a condition set down by Ashton-Warner. She was born in 1906 into an eccentric New Zealand family; she combined a nontraditional marriage with an erratic c areer as teacher-writer. She thrived on love-hate relationships, was a deeply restless woman, flirtatious even in old age, alcohol ic and, yet, as her biographer demonstrates, strangely charismati c. Photos.
