Erst 1946 aus den preußischen Provinzen Westfalen und dem Nordteil der Rheinprovinz entstanden, kam 1947 das Land Lippe hinzu. Einst insbesondere im Ruhrgebiet vom Bergbau geprägt, vollzieht sich seit den 1960er Jahren ein immer noch anhaltender Strukturwandel.
Doch nicht nur als Industriestandort hat NRW viel zu bieten, Erholung in der Natur findet man zum Beispiel in der Eifel mit ihrer einmaligen Naturlandschaft, im Teutoburger Wald mit seiner wilden Schönheit oder in der Ruhe des Rothaargebirges.
Von einer überaus reichen Kulturlandschaft zeugen vor allem die Bauwerke in den Städten und Dörfern, wie allen voran der Kölner Dom, aber auch der Aachener Dom, die Schlösser Augustusburg und Falkenlust, die ebenso wie die Zeche und Kokerei Zollverein den UNESCO-Weltkulturerbestätten gehören. Von der bedeutenden Vergangenheit erzählen ebenso der Altenburger Dom, das Kloster Corvey oder die Schlösser Nordkirchen und Burg, Bestandteil der Rheinromantik ist die Burgruine Drachenfels im Siebengebirge. In über 350 Museen findet man Kunst und Kurioses von der Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn über das Deutsche Bergbaumuseum in Bochum bis zum Deutschen Tabak- und Zigarrenmuseum in Bünde. Mehr als 100 große und kleine Bühnen bilden das Forum für Schauspiel Tanz und Kabarett, fast 60 Orchester und 170 Musikschulen sorgen für die musikalische Unterhaltung.
