From Wikipedia: "Cyril Bentham Falls CBE (March 2, 1888 April 23, 1971) was a military historian noted for his work on the First World War. He was born in Dublin and died in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey. Falls served in the First World War, reaching the rank of Captain in the British Army. He was on the General Staff for the 36th (Ulster) Division and 62nd (2nd West Riding) Division. He received the French Croix de Guerre. After the war, he helped write several volumes of the British official History of the Great War. Later he wrote both detailed specialist histories as well as histories intended for the average reader. An expert on the history of the First World War, he was the Chichele Professor of Military History at All Souls, Oxford University from 1946 to 1953." From Wikipedia: "Sr John Wheeler Wheeler-Bennett (1902 1975), GCVO, CMG, OBE, FBA, FRSL was a conservative English historian of German and diplomatic history, and the official biographer of King George VI. Wheeler-Bennett was born in Keston, Kent, the son of a wealthy importer on 13 October 1902. He was educated at a school in Westgate on Sea and Malvern College. He did not regard his youth as a happy one. In the 1920s, Wheeler-Bennett worked as an aide to General Sir Neil Malcolm in the Middle East and Berlin. After leaving Malcolm's employ, Wheeler-Bennett served in the publicity department of the League of Nations in 1923-1924 in Geneva. Afterwards, Wheeler-Bennett worked as the director of the Royal Institute of International Affairs' information department. In particular, Wheeler-Bennett worked as the editor of the Bulletin of International News between 1924-1932. He lived in Germany between 1927 1934 and witnessed first-hand the collapse of the Weimar Republic and the rise of Nazi Germany. During his time living in Berlin, he enjoyed some success as a horse-breeder. During this period, he became an unofficial agent and advisor to London on international events....Wheeler-Bennet's biography of Paul von Hindenburg created his reputation as a historian. Another great success was The Forgotten Peace, a study of the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk. This is still regarded as the standard historical study of the subject. After the Second World War, Wheeler-Bennett was a critic of Appeasement and 10 years after the Munich Agreement wrote a book condemning it. In the pre-1939 period, Wheeler-Bennett befriended or was at least on speaking terms with a number of well-known people all over Europe. Some of the people he had some contact with included Heinrich Brüning, Basil Liddell Hart, Franz von Papen, John Buchan, Carl Friedrich Goerdeler, Leon Trotsky, Hans von Seeckt, Max Hoffmann, Lewis Bernstein Namier, Benito Mussolini, Robert Bruce Lockhart, Karl Radek, Sir Robert Gilbert Vansittart, Kurt von Schleicher, Sir Isaiah Berlin, Tomas Masaryk, Engelbert Dollfuss, the former Kaiser Wilhelm II, Adam von Trott zu Solz, Louis Barthou, Lord Lothian, Winston Churchill, and Dr. Edvard Benes. In 1939, he went to the United States to serve as a lecturer on international relations at the University of Virginia. Wheeler-Bennett was strongly pro-American and always considered the American South to be his favourite part of the American republic. From 1940 onwards, he worked with the British Information Service in New York City, an agency charged with trying to persuade the United States to enter the war on the Allied side. Whilst here, he was a supporter of the German Resistance to Hitler and became friendly with Adam von Trott zu Solz. Starting in 1942, Wheeler-Bennett worked in the Political Warfare department of the British Foreign Office in London. After he joined the Foreign Office, he switched to being an opponent of the German Resistance, his change being described by the biographer Anthony Howard, in the New., U. S. "At the turn of the last century, the Arts and Crafts movement transformed not only how objects looked but also how people looked at objects. It provided a framework for essential issues that are still debated today: the conflict between standardization and individuality, the question of whether a one-of-a-kind handcrafted object is superior to a mass-produced one, and the problem of defining what kind of design most benefits society. With more than 300 objects - furniture, ceramics, metalwork, textiles, and works on paper - from England, Scotland, Ireland, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Belgium, France, and the United States, this is a visually stunning, definitive survey. The book features masterworks by the best-known designers of the period, such as William Morris, M. H. Baillie Scott, Henry Van de Velde, Peter Behrens, Josef Hoffmann, Eliel Saarinen, Gustav Stickley, Greene and Greene, and Frank Lloyd Wright, as well as lesser-known examples that have never been displayed together before." - Publisher. "Presents a selection of more than 100 furnishing textiles and designs that range from a spectacular printed hanging designed by the Wiener Werkst, tte artist, Dagobert Peche, between 1911 and 1918, to a series of dramatic woven, silk and metal wall coverings Les Colombes designed by Henri Stephany for the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes. The Art Deco period is well represented by the works of Raoul Dufy, Alberto Lorenzi, Robert Bonfils, Alfred Latour, Emile Alain Seguy and Paul Dumas. Although the majority of pre-Second World War textiles are of French origin, the exhibition also includes some rare British furnishing fabrics from the 1930s, in particular the iconic and very elegant Magnolia Leaf by Marion Dorn, woven in off-white and silver viscut by Warner & Sons in 1936. During this period, Britain attracted talented European designers, such as Jacqueline Groag and Marian Mahler who had trained with Josef Hoffmann at the Vienna Kunstgewerbeschule."--Amazon., Francesca Galloway, 2007, 3, Cambridge, Massachusetts: The MIT Press, 1979. His principal area of research deals with the German Resistance against National Socialism, and in particular, the resistance efforts of Claus von Stauffenberg. Hoffmann lives in Canada and in Germany. Hoffmann was born in Dresden and grew up in Stuttgart, Germany. After studying at the universities of Stuttgart, Tübingen, Zurich, Northwestern University and Munich he received his Ph.D. in 1961 from Franz Schnabel following his thesis defense on The diplomatic relations between Wurtemberg and Bavaria from the Crimean War and the beginning of the Italian Crisis. In 1970 he took up a teaching position on German History at McGill University in Montreal. Hoffmann is the William Kingsford Professor of History and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. In this book, Peter Hoffmann presents significant new material on the many (at least 30) assassination attempts against Adolf Hitler, and unfolds what is probably the most complete description of the security measures surrounding the German dictator. Hoffmann's study examines in detail the security precautions taken from the early 1920s through the elaborate plans of the Reich Security services and the SS bodyguard detachments during World War II. Hoffmann disproves Hitler's well-known claims of indifference to his own security, while revealing the paradox of his self-destructive tendencies. He discloses the gaps in Hitler's security systems, and at the same time points out that numerous attempts on Hitler's life failed much less because of security measures than because of bizarre accidents. "I am immortal!" exulted Hitler in the wake of the failed assassination plot of July 20, 1944. As Peter Hoffmann shows in this startling book, that bombing was only the best known of more than thirty attempts on Hitler's life, the first coming as early as 1921, when he was the leader of the German worker's party. Using extensive archival material, Hoffmann details these assassination plots and outlines the fanatically complex security measures that developed to keep Hitler safe. He analyzes Hitler's SS escort and the other security groups responsible for his life-there were so many of them that they often counteracted one another-together with their arrangements for his transportation, public appearances, residences, and wartime headquarters. Providing remarkable new information about the workings of those devoted to defending and destroying him, this book is an invaluable contribution to the history of the Third Reich. Derived from a review by Marcus Wendel found on-line. "Hitler's Personal Security: Protecting the Führer 1921-1945" deals with the security around Adolf Hitler, from the pre-Putsch days until his suicide in 1945. It covers both the organizational details of the bodyguard organizations, as well as his residences, military headquarters etc. The first chapter of the book deals with the security around Hitler before he came to power, providing info on for example the first bodyguards and the Putsch of 1923. The is followed by an introduction to the security around the Chancellor before dealing with the development and organization of the security formations around Hitler, ie ReichsSicherheitsDienst (RSD) and SS-Begleit-Kommando. The following chapters deals with transportation (with details on the cars, trains and airplanes he used), public appearances (how he acted and how he was protected), international travel, residences (Chancellery, Obersalzberg and his apartment at Prinzregentenplatz in Munich) and finally military headquarters (both those he used and those that were built for him but never actually used). The numerous attempts on his life is covered through out the book, with particular focus on the ones made by Maurice Bavaud (1938), Georg Elser (1939) and of course Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg (1944). The final section of the book provides a listing of these events., The MIT Press, 1979, 2.75, Quadrangle/New York Times Book Co, 1975-01-01. Hardcover. Good. Dalmorès'; short crease at top left corner, verso with a couple of old tape marks, otherwise very good. 'Charles Dalmorès (1871-1939) was a French tenor. He enjoyed an international operatic career, singing to public and critical acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic during the first two decades of the 20th century. He was born on 1 January 1871 as Henri Alphonse Brin in Nancy, France. Dalmorès studied at the local conservatory of music and embarked on a career as a horn player with the Colonne and Lamoureux orchestras. In 1894, the Lyon Conservatory appointed him to a professorial position. Later, when his voice showed signs of promise, he abandoned instrumental music and took singing lessons in Paris. He made his operatic debut at the Théâtre des Arts in Rouen on 6 October 1899, in the heavy Wagnerian role of Siegfried. Following this, he spent six seasons with the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels and sang with success at London's Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, in 19041905 and 19091911. His American debut took place in Charles Gounod's Faust, in which he appeared with New York's Manhattan Opera Company on December 7, 1906. He spent four years with the company, specializing in French roles. For American audiences, he created the roles of Julien in Gustave Charpentier's Louise and Jean Gaussin in Jules Massenet's Sapho. Another famous part that he sang was Pelleas in Claude Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande. He also appeared in numerous productions with the Philadelphia Opera Company between 19081910. In 1910 Dalmorès was engaged by the Chicago Grand Opera Company with whom he performed until 1914. The company was highly active in Philadelphia as well as Chicago and often performed under the title of the Philadelphia-Chicago Grand Opera Company while in that city. With that company he notably performed the role of Vinicius in the United States premiere of Jean Nouguès's Quo vadis. In 1917 Dalmorès joined the Chicago Opera Association. There he sang for the first time the title roles in Richard Wagner's Parsifal and Tristan und Isolde. He also visited Germany and Austria on different occasions prior to the outbreak of World War I, performing Wagner in the original language in Berlin and other cities. In 19081909, he appeared at the Vienna Court Opera and undertook the role of Lohengrin, in Wagner's eponymous opera, at the 1908 Bayreuth Festival. Tall for a tenor, he was praised by contemporary critics not only for his strong, steady, well-modulated voice but also for his impressive stage presence and acting. Fortunately, he made a number of gramophone records for the Victor Talking Machine Company which have been reissued on CD. Produced between 1907 and 1912, they confirm the excellence of his musicianship and the imposing power of his declamatory singing, although the top of his range sounds a bit constricted on these 100-year-old discs. One of his most celebrated records is a 1907 rendition of Manrico's aria ""Ah! si, ben mio"", from Giuseppe Verdi's Il trovatore, in which he displays an admirably smooth legato line, elegant phrasing and a splendid trill. He also recorded a few French songs as well as arias and duets from various operas, including Lohengrin, Giacomo Meyerbeer's Le prophète, Camille Saint-Saëns' Samson et Dalila, Jacques Offenbach's Les Contes d'Hoffmann, Georges Bizet's Carmen, Massenet's Grisélidis, and Gounod's Roméo et Juliette and Faust. Dalmorès returned to France in 1918 but subsequently went back to the United States to live where he taught singing. He died in Hollywood, California on December 6, 1939, at the age of 68. In the pantheon of great French dramatic/lyric-dramatic tenors, his place is secure. He proved to be a worthy successor to Jean de Res..., 0, Autumn Press, 1977.
