The Beginning A few hours before the exchange of gifts on Christmas Eve, life in the center of town is bustling faster than ever. Masses of people storm the shops one last time to make final purchases, and only after closing time does something like quiet arise. While members of established society withdraw into their houses and dwellings, a homeless man sits, alone and freezing, in his poorly constructed cardboard hovel, which offers only moderate protection from cold weather, wind, and falling snow. Memories of His Earlier Life in Flashbacks While he dozes there, as motionless as possible, memories of his earlier life come into his consciousness as flashbacks. At one time the homeless person was married and the proud father of two children. He operated an independent grocery, which he had to give up due to economic circumstances. Consequently he began to drink, and his relationship with his wife deteriorated, until she finally divorced him. After that, a social descent began which gradually led to homelessness. Being Alone: A Constant Internal Fight This homeless man has lived on the street for many years now. Living alone on the edge of society is hard enough to bear during the year at Christmastime, on Christmas Eve, its even worse. Troubled by depression, he struggles with himself to make sense of his life. In a condition of utmost internal tension, he walks into the silence of the night and desperately asks for help. The Stranger in the Darkness of the Night A little later, the homeless man hears crunching footsteps approaching. Full of fear, he sees an unknown stranger. The stranger introduces himself as a friendly companion who would like to invite him on Christmas Eve to get something to eat at a nearby restaurant. But after experiencing so many years on the street, he doesnt trust the stranger, and asks him very emotionally to leave him alone. The stranger leaves, but repeats his invitation as he goes. Curiosity Triumphs After the stranger leaves the homeless man struggles with himself because of the invitation. Was he right to turn it down, or had he only missed out on the chance to enjoy a warm meal with company on Christmas Eve Eventually, he picks himself up and follows after the stranger, who was actually waiting for him at the restaurant as promised. A Miracle Happens Due to the invitation, the homeless man feels obligated to tell the stranger his story. Subsequently, the other man reveals himself to be a messenger of God, and expresses a prophecy of the Lord over the homeless people: his cry for help has been heard his life will now change completely. He will strive for truth and knowledge, and care for the lost sheep of the Lord. Before the homeless man understands what has taken place, the angel has disappeared. Many Years Later The man actually does succeed in climbing out of homelessness, and finds himself at a public ceremony honoring him for his life`s work. The preceding story turned out to be part of his acceptance speech. That evening, he tells a large gathering of his meeting with the angel for the first time. After the program, they are still conversing intensely in the hall at their tables about the story of the angel they have just heard. An Old Acquaintance Emerges One of the honored guests enters a small veranda a second, apparently older than the first, joins him. They also enter into a discussion over his story. Here the younger man strongly questions the reliability of the narration. The older man calmly listens for a while, and finally confirms the story of the honored man and reveals himself to be the angel of which it tells. Again, a Prophesy is Proclaimed But theres more. The angel expresses the same prophecy over this man as it did at that time over the homeless. His companion is speechless. Instinctively, he looks around for witnesses of the scene. When he turns to the angel again, he has disappeared. The end Just at this moment, the honored man enters the balcony and meets the speechless guest, who tells him plainly of the event that has just happened. The former homeless man laughs cordially, acts a little surprised, and invites the other man to his table to discuss the future.
