Gutes Exemplar; der illustr. Einband stw. gering berieben. - Englisch; Polnisch. - The history of Ghetto Heroes Square, one of the main squares of Podgorze, dates back to the 1880s. It was built during a period of extensive rebuilding of Podgorze, which, up until that time had been a separate town. The border settlement was founded by the Austrian authorities after Poland's partition in 1772. Podgorze, being a garrison headquarters, developed quickly thanks to numerous charters granted by the Emperor. In 1784 Joseph II granted Podgorze the rights of a Free Royal City. Up until the year 1915 Podgorze functioned as an independent town. The events of Second World War made the square inextricably linked with the tragedy of Krakow's Jews. As a result of the German occupation, the square was the scene of the largest crime committed by the Nazis on its citizens. Nowadays the square preserves the memory of those events and is one of the places most commonly visited by tourists coming to Krakow. In the face of the German crimes committed at the square, its pre-war history pales in comparson. However, the creation of the ghetto around the then Zgoda Square was a traumatic experience for the residents of Podgorze who were used to their Jewish neighbours. Let us then come back to the beginning. From the very beginning, Podgorze as a town, it has been subject to orderly urbanisation. The draft plan of the square appeared in cadastral plans for Podgorze from the first half of the 19 century. It was a non built-up area between the roads leading to the salt storehouse in Zablocie. Nowadays they run along Lwowska, Targowa and Piwna streets. The focal point of today's square, bordering on the Salinarny track (today's Lwowska Street), was a horse arena (Reitschule) used by the uhlans stationed in the nearby salt warehouse. Most likely, it was closed down in the late 1870s. In the 1880s, the square hosted a market called "the pig market first and the cattle market later". Due to the gradual development of the town, from the late 1890s onwards, the cattle markets were taking place "opposite Baruch mills" at Nadwislariska Street. During the same period, the borders of the square were decided upon and it started to be called "little market square". The property borders were fixed for the newly erected buildings. The buildings were marked with the use of a double numbering system. (Seite 9/10) ISBN 9788361516491 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550, Books<
