And there is rekindled hope for the survival of humanity when he encounters other human beings like himself, and among them women and children. Love brings meaning into Kevin s life and he establishes a home; and the Church, too, finds a home in a place strangely reminiscent of its past. The events of the book proclaim once more that civilization may be reduced to rubble and ashes, but out of the new catacombs there will rise a Church gloriously intact.
