"The Ted Scott Flying Stories was a series of juvenile aviation adventures created by the Stratemeyer Syndicate using the pseudonym of Franklin W. Dixon (also used for The Hardy Boys) and published almost exclusively by Grosset & Dunlap. The novels were produced between 1927 and 1943. The principal author was John W. Duffield, who also contributed to the Don Sturdy and Bomba the Jungle Boy series. As "Richard H. Stone" he also launched a second Stratemeyer aviation series, the Slim Tyler Air stories (1930â1932). Duffield was a conscientious student of aeronautical technology, and long passages in the Ted Scott books can be traced to such sources as Aviation, the New York Times, Aero Digest, and Science. The series featured Ted Scott, a public aviation hero rather than merely an amateur aviator. In the first book in the series, Over the Ocean to Paris published in 1927, Ted Scott achieved fame for being the first pilot to fly over the Atlantic Ocean to Paris, a feat first accomplished in the real world by Charles Lindbergh in May of that year., Grosset & Dunlap, 1935, 2.5, New York: Grosset & Dunlap, 1928. First Edition. First Printing.. Softcover. Fine/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. London, England: Penguin Books, 2000. Softcover. Fine/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 217 pages. Collection of previously unpublished short stories. One of the best literary collections of its kind of our time. The true First Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the American Edition, which was published the following year, in 2001. Published in a small and limited first print run as a softcover original only that sold out upon publication. The First Edition is now rare. Presents "Speaking With The Angel: 12 Completely New Stories". Truly an enduring contribution to contemporary literature. All of the stories appear for the first and only time in this book. Edited with an Introduction (and his very own Contribution) by Nick Hornby. The contributors are some of the most brilliant writers of our time. In no particular order: Giles Smith, Helen Fielding, Roddy Doyle, Irvine Welsh, Zadie Smith, Dave Eggers, Robert Harris, Melissa Bank, Patrick Marber, Colin Firth, and John O'Farrell. "A fresh and funny collection that is sure to be the literary anthology of the year 2000. Here is a book that was inspired by a very special boy and a very special school. Money from each copy sold benefits autism-education charities around the world, including The Treehouse School London, where Nick's son Danny [to whom the book is dedicated] is a student, and the New York Child Learning Institute in the United States. By turns clever, outrageous, witty, edgy, tender, and wicked, or what is meant by original" (Publisher's blurb). Two standouts: Zadie Smith's "I'm The Only One" is a study in narcissism and sibling rivalry, as a young man recounts his strained relationship with his diva sister. Dave Eggers' "After I Was Thrown In The River And Before I Drowned" is told by the eponymously ill-fated pit bull. An absolute "must-have" title for contemporary literature collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Nick Hornby. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. It is also very beautifully and uniquely signed, dated, and inscribed in black ink-pen on his Contribution by Dave Eggers: "Hey Tom, thanks for owning this. This book has done much good, Dave Eggers 9/27/O2". This title is a great collection. As far as we know, this is the only such double-signed and inscribed copy of the true First Edition/First Printing (British) available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Precedes and should NOT be confused with the American Edition, published the following year, in 2001. Copies available online have very serious flaws (because they were read) or are in multiple subsequent printings. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. Some of the most brilliant writers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER NICK HORNBY AND DAVE EGGERS TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0140296786., Penguin Books, 2000, 5, USA: American Book Company, Circa 1920's. Early Edition. Hardcover. Pictorial Green Cloth Covered Boards. Original, Good Condition. James Baldwin (1841-1925) was an American editor and author. Largely self-educated, he began teaching at the age of 24. In addition to editing school books, he started writing books of his own. After the publication in 1882 of The Story of Siegfried, he went on to write more than 50 others. At one time it was estimated that of all the school books in use in the United States, over half had been written or edited by him. He is best remembered for the books of introductory historical sketches he wrote for younger students and his retellings of the legends of heroes for older students. Other works include: The Story of Roland (1883), A Story of the Golden Age (1887), Old Greek Stories (1895), Fifty Famous Stories Retold (1896), Four Great Americans (1897), Hero Tales (1904), Fifty Famous People (1912) and In My Youth (1914). 50 famous stories of long-ago times, retold in a short form for all young people. These are tales of valor, bravery, and kindness, as well as high adventure. Included: "King Alfred and the Cakes", "King Alfred and the Beggar", "King Canute of the Seashore", "The Sons of William the Conqueror", "The White Ship", "King John and the Abbott", "The Story of Robin Hood", "Bruce and the Spider", "The Black Douglas", "The Three Men of Gotham", "Other Wise Men of Gotham", "The Miller of the Dee", "Sir Philip Sidney", "Ungrateful Soldier", "Sir Humphrey Gilbert", "Sir Walter Raleigh", "Pocahontas", "George Washington and His Hatchet", "Grace Darling", "The Story of William Tell", "Arnold Winkelreid", "The Bell of Atri", "How Napoleon Crossed the Alps", "The Story of Cincinnatus", "The Story of Regulus", "Cornelia's Jewels", "Androclus and the Lion", "Horatius at the Bridge", "Julius Caesar", "The Sword of Damocles", "Damon and Pythias", "A Laconic Answer", "The Ungrateful Guest", "Alexander and Bucephalus", "Diogenes the Wise Man", "The Brave Three Hundred", "Socrates and His House", "The King and His Hawk", "Doctor Goldsmith", "The Kingdoms", "The Barmecide Feast", "The Endless Tale", "The Blind Men and the Elephant", "Maximilian and the Goose Boy", "The Inchcape Rock", "Whittington and His Cat", "Casabianca", "Antonio Canova", "Picciola", and "Mignon". NOT ex-libris. Very clean and tight inside, no markings or inscriptions. [see image scan of actual book], American Book Company, 2.5<
